Northwestern basketball player Zech Sanders proved ready when the opportunity for extended playing time finally came his senior season. He put together a string of four straight 20-point games late in the season, finished with a team-high average of 13.9 points per game and garnered Kokomo Tribune All-Area honors.

Sanders plans to build on his breakout season when he heads to John Wood Community College in Quincy, Ill., which is located on the Mississippi River in the western part of the state. He will receive a full-ride scholarship.

“I’ve always known I can play, I just really didn’t have the chance until my last year,” Sanders said. “I just thank God for the opportunity I have right now. I want to make the most of it.”

JWCC coach Michael Elbe is glad to add Sanders to his program.

“We really feel like he’s going to be a versatile guard for us — somebody who is going to be sort of an athlete out there on the floor, that can score in a variety of ways and just be a solid basketball player for us,” Elbe said.

Zech Sanders, Northwestern

Sanders, a 6-3 senior wing, scored 13.9 ppg and grabbed 4.4 rpg for the Howard County Tournament champion Purple Tigers. In addition to scoring, Sanders also topped his squad in 3-pointers made (42), blocked shots (12) and deflections (23).

“He did a lot offensively for us that allowed us to have some success this year,” Northwestern coach Jim Gish said, noting Sanders led the Tigers in scoring. “He had the ability to get to the rim and hit the jumper as well.”

Sanders caught fire late in the regular season. In consecutive games, he scored 23 points in an upset of Peru, 24 points against Frankfort, 28 against Hamilton Heights and 25 against Eastern. He topped his previous career high three different times during the stretch.
Sanders is a younger brother of four-time All-Area player Zavier Sanders.

Zech Sanders enters the game on a hot streak

Northwestern forward Zech Sanders enters the game on a hot streak. The Tiger senior recorded career high in points in three straight games — 23 against Peru, 24 against Frankfort and 28 against Hamilton Heights. Gish noted Sanders has learned to counter when the opposing team tries to take away a certain part of his game. “Right now, he is doing an excellent job of reading the defense and taking what they give him. He is a kid who we feel has the ability to dribble drive and has a really nice pull-up game, and has the ability to shoot the 3,”

Hard time guarding Sanders

Both teams came out shooting well, especially Northwestern senior Zech Sanders, who had 13 first-quarter points off the bench including three 3-pointers.“Obviously in the first half we had a real hard time guarding Sanders we just got to keep getting better defensively and play every possession.”

Sanders finished with 24 points for the Tigers.

HOOPS: Tigers race past Oracles

Hot Sanders scores 18 as NW takes control early in 58-41 win

Basketball teams are supposed to be rusty after a three-week layoff. Apparently, someone forgot to tell Zech Sanders and the Northwestern Tigers as they started fast and never looked back, leading the Delphi Oracles from wire to wire for a 58-41 win. The victory evened the Tigers’ record at 3-3 on the season. Sanders was red hot as the game began, scoring the game’s first eight points on two 3-pointers and a baseline drive. Delphi regrouped, but still trailed 18-8 after a period. Sanders, who hit five of seven shots in the first half, including four of six from beyond the arc, was a beneficiary of good teamwork according to Gish. “It all started with the defensive end,” he noted. “Zech obviously did some nice things offensively for us, but, wow, his defense was really good … and, in turn, that got his offense going. The Tiger onslaught continued in the second quarter. With Sanders canning two more treys, NW extended its lead to 36-16 at intermission.Sanders finished the game with 18 points to lead all scorers.

Sanders spark NW victory

Senior Zech Sanders fueled the first-period outbreak for Northwestern (11-8, 4-3 MIC) and in doing so continued his sizzling scoring streak. Sanders canned a pair of 3 point feild goals and scored eights as the Tigers led 16-2 before the Comets could stop the bleeding. The 6-foot-3, butter smooth Sanders tallied game-high totals of 25 points and seven rebounds, his forth consecutive game with 20 or more points. "he's playing athletic basketball- all the things you can't coach, things that God has given him he's establishing to his benefit," Tigers coach Jim Gish said of Sanders."It's fun as a coach to sit back and watch him use these tools he has. Sanders made 8 of 11 shots from the field, including the two 3s and 7 of 9 free throws- 4 of 4 in the fourth quarter. he twice converted acrobatic offensive- rebound tips into buckets."Zech is a competitor and doesn't like to lose, so he's found that to help us to win he has to play at his top level," Gish added. "That's what has most impressed me about Zech Sanders."
